Yes, I am way behind on this one. I don’t think the wait diminished the experience, however. The Despicable Me series is amusing… and it is the minions that really sell that story line. They are the silly humor amidst the other silly humor that keeps it all moving. But sidekicks don’t necessarily make the best focus for a full-length movie.
Sandra Bullock (Gravity) as the stand-in for Gru was great fun, if a little diminished in her feminism by her goals. But she became the entertaining background. Same was true for Allison Janney’s (Mr. Peabody and Sherman) evil suburban mom character, though she held onto her NOW card a little better. The whole film felt like the interlude it is between the previous Despicable Me 2 and the next, arriving in another year.
I realize I’m in the minority here, and I’m not saying it wasn’t fun. It is an amusing attempt to explain the little yellow guys and the time period and music choices certainly added a layer of fun. Kids love the silliness and adults can find additional layers for themselves. But it works best as a piece, part of the rest of the Gru stories rather than on their own. That’s just the nature of sidekicks.
