I went. I saw. I had my faith somewhat restored in the franchise.
The film did what it had to do. It introduced the story to a new generation. It handed off the story for an older generation. What matters now is what they do with what they’ve created. I don’t know if they are able to go off into the wilderness given how much this episode cleaved to the original (sometimes in shot for shot recreations), but may the force be with them.
The truth is that as much fun as folks may be having with this latest sequel, it just isn’t that good a script; it’s just directed and edited to be one heck of a ride. There are some great moments, but those are almost all steals (or homage if you prefer) from Episode IV, which is why I’m so concerned about how they move forward. But I’m willing to give it all a chance. I certainly had fun and not a little nostalgia. Give me something new and wonderful for VIII and we’re talking!
